TGIF-- but it's not what you think

Sure, it's Friday. But today, TGIF also stands for This GO! is Fantastic!

The amazing people at AccuQuilt contacted me a couple of weeks ago asking if I would like to try out their GO! Baby cutter. I jumped at the opportunity, and my big box of happiness landed on our doorstep Wednesday afternoon. The girls and I had everything out on the kitchen table and played right away. So fun and easy to use!

I've got plans to make a couple of much-needed cushions this weekend for my brown leather couches using either the chisel or quarter square dies. Or maybe I'll use the tumbler, which has been a favorite of mine since AccuQuilt released their GO! cutters. You'll also have the opportunity to win your very own GO! Baby. Stay tuned! And in the meantime, learn more about AccuQuilt and get 22 free patterns here:

One Year

A year ago today when I started this blog, I had no idea that I would enjoy it as much as I do now. My first posts felt so awkward. I shared the link with just a few family members, thinking I would use this space more for posting updates on the kids rather than what I was making. I had my doubts about posting at all! But I remember the first time I received a comment-- it was from Monica of Quilt While You're Ahead, a blog I had read for years. It sort of blew my mind that someone who I had admired for so long had actually taken the time to look at my measly little blog and give me encouragement. (Monica, I don't know if you realize what a boost of confidence that was for me in the early days-- thank you! If you were here, I'd give you a great big hug.)

144 posts later I definitely feel like a part of the blogging community. I love the inspiration that I find, the friends I've made, and being able to share the things that I make with people who "get it." I know I'm not alone in feeling like I sort of have to justify my hobbies of sewing and quilting. My switch from working full-time to being a stay at home mom brought some insecurities about how I would connect with others and if the activities I did in my free time were, well, dorky. I'm happy to say those insecurities are pretty much long gone, and the time I spend connecting through this space is so vital and fulfilling in my life.

As a thank you to all who have read and supported me this past year, I'm giving away a fat quarter bundle of some of my favorite blue and green shot cottons and an Alexander Henry cotton lawn print. They feel like spring, don't they?

For your chance to win, just leave a comment! I will ship anywhere in the world. Just make sure I have a way to contact you! The giveaway will stay open until I pick a winner on Sunday morning here in Alaska. Good luck, and once again-- thank you!

Anna, I'll be contacting you with details!

Thank you for all of the comments about what you plan to do for a handmade holiday this year. There are a lot of you out there who are doing big things like quilts! I'm really impressed! As for me, I plan to give handmade ornaments and some food items like granola and canned dilly beans. I had thought I would do mug rugs for teachers, but there is only so much time! As for my immediate family, I do want to complete a big snuggly couch quilt to use at our house. I did do a decoration for us that will also make it's way into the shop. More on that later! Have a good one!

a wee giveaway

Whoops! I really did mean to come back to this space yesterday to do the giveaway, but Rob had the day off and we were able to spend it doing fun stuff like skiing:

So onto the giveaway. I'm offering up a pair of two bird ornaments, in the colors of your choice.

Leave a comment here telling me what handmade holiday plans you have-- what handmade things do you plan to buy, and what will you be making? You can leave a second comment if you're a follower (or become one).

I'll keep the giveaway open through tomorrow night (Sunday, November 14) at midnight Alaska time. The winner will be picked by a random number generator. Good luck, and enjoy your weekend!

Monica! (I always thought that the first commenter on giveaway posts would never get picked. Guess I was wrong!) Congrats Monica! I'll email you for your address.

There were quite a few commonalities in the comments about intimidating crafty things-- it looks like zippers and buttonholes scare the bejeezus out of a lot of us. Maybe I can find a free pattern (patterns-- shudder) with both of those techniques and do an informal sew-along to get us over our fears. For now though, I hope everyone enjoys their weekend and does something crafty!

doh! and a wee giveaway

Don't you hate it when you put off trying something because you think it's SO HARD? I feel this way about a lot of crafts, particularly ones where there are pattern pieces. I freeze up when it comes time to cut the fabric. Hence all of my improvisational projects.

Making a simple drawstring bag was one of those things. I couldn't wrap my head around the casing. But last night I became a woman obsessed with making one. So I read many, many tutorials. And found this one to be intriguing. Because no lining? And French seams (another thing I feared)? Yay!

So this morning I gave it a try. This one is maybe 7" square and uses one of my favorite fabrics-- a japanese matryoshka linen. So freaking simple, why did I not try this sooner??? I see many, many of these in my future. So many, that I'm going to give this one away. I'll even fill it with some fun stuff. Just leave me a comment with one of those projects that you've been putting off, or overcame. I'll leave it open until midnight tomorrow (Friday, September 3) Alaska time.

Toodles!

my lucky day

Let it be known that I never, ever win giveaways, drawings, contests, etc. So imagine my surprise when I open my email this morning and have a note from the lovely Monica of Quilt While You're Ahead saying that I won her giveaway for some awesome tropical bath goodies!

(image from Monica's blog)

Then imagine how even more surprised I was to check Amy's blog, During Quiet Time, a little while ago to find that I won some of her beautiful printed cards, which she just started selling in her etsy shop. Aren't they beautiful?

(image from Amy's blog)

I mean seriously, two wins in one day? I might as well stop entering giveaways after this, because I think I've used up a lifetime of luck all at once. Thank you Amy and Monica!

To top it off, the mailman just showed up with my recent order from Sew Mama Sew. Every piece was on super sale, plus I got 3 free fat quarters with my order. So there's something like 36 new fat quarters in that stack. Yum, yum, yum.

What a day.
