mulling it over

I've got the busiest week ever coming up. Yet I have decided that I MUST finish the quilt that is destined for the big orange wall. The block pattern is "Kathy's Block" from Gwen Marston's book Liberated Quiltmaking II. All but a couple were made by members of the Bee Liberated group of Flickr. I'm expecting two more blocks that are winging their way in from the Bahamas any day now, then I'll be making the rest. That is, when I decide how big to make this baby. I need your help!

My original thought was to make the quilt a 5 x 5 square. Now that it's up on the wall, I'm not so sure that's the right choice. Thoughts? Do I go 4 x6? 5 x 6? This is one of those times where I wish I had photoshop so I could do a mock up.

I'll also take suggestions on how to quilt it. Oh, and any other way to spice up my boring living room. I may have to cave and do some throw pillows for the couches. I think the quilt is a good start though!

i like it! I think it should be a square quilt. It's going to look great!

I would do at least two more columns, maybe even three. It would be more proportional to the couch that way. Either way, it's beautiful!

I vote 4x6. I don't think it needs to be any taller, just longer. It's beautiful! It's going to be a gorgeous addition to the room!

I also vote for the 4 by 6 or other rectangular arraignment. Either way it is going to be a great quilt.

do a mosaic mock up in big huge labs mosaic maker - it helps no end!!!

I like square...it makes a great 'picture frame' type feature on the wall.

Love this quilt - it is perfect for the wall. From the photo, the feature wall looks square, so I vote for a 5x5 square quilt...or even 6x6. Definitely square, though.

And sorry, but I think some throw pillows are in order, too. But next week.

I say square too. 5x5 is good...

Krista it's going to be just gorgeous.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. It's awesome!

I like the proportion of a square on that wall with the long couch. I think it provides balance that way. I can help you with a mockup if you want! Just send me a couple pictures. By the way, I love it!

Love it! Yes...square would be nice! Can't wait to see the finish!

I'm having trouble deciding whether it would look best centered on the wall or above the couch. I think I like the idea of 5 x 5 or 4 x 6. It's looking great!

Wow, that is very cool! I think the bigger the quilt the more dramatic it will be...especially since the quilt is fairly light and neutral. I think it's going to be a great statement piece for the room! But I think it will look great if you decide to keep it smaller too! It's a winner either way.

You know, I can't decide which would work better: 5x5 or 4x6. I think you need some asymmetry, somehow. What about something in between? Like do a 4x4 piece and then a separate 1x4 piece and hang it next to it. So you'd have a square piece and right next to it (maybe a couple of inches away) a tall rectangular piece.

It looks great though!

Ok, looking at your photo again, what if you did a darker strip (column) in a 4x6 or 5x5 layout just to mix it up??

wow, really striking!!! I'm jealous. :) I think a 4x6 would be beautiful. and maybe random line quilting, but do whatever suits you! :)

colour photocopy some of the squares and tape them to the wall to get a feel...or just use plain paper....I think 4 x6 would be good but wonder if it would look cool if it were a tall quilt on that wall... hmmm...it's going to be lovely regardless... :)

I love this block and need to make something with it too.

I'd go bigger and square. I like it off-set to the sofa.

Your colors are great.

I love it! The colors are just perfect for that wall, especially those touches of grey/putty. But I would go bigger...more to love, right?

I had the same idea as Lucia. The sofa placement is somewhat asymmetrical. I think that would be nicely reflected in a two-piece quilt display of a square with a narrow rectangle next to it (with small space).

Oooh I love the ideas for a diptych from Lucia and Tanya!

This is going to look great! I thought 4 x 6 until I looked at the comments. Now I think a couple of quilts would be awesome...oh I don't know! I always want things symmetrical, so matching the length of the couch is my first thought. And that doesn't really ever work out in my house- so square for sure. Or two quilts. Ha ha, I am no help.

For me it's either a 4x6 or a 5x5 with a 5x2 next to it

Imagining this as a painted canvas, I would think 4x6 would be perfect. It is a really beautiful quilt, and is going to look so great in your space. Good luck!

I agree with the asymmetrical suggestions. Though, you could even throw in a couple of solid squares to help with the asymmetry too.

how about 4x4, off set in a big rectangle of solid background?
stunning whichever way to go.
love it.

first of all I love this. second of all, I think you're right to change it to a rectangle. Bigger is better... third of all, Nova is a genius.
