It's so easy and a perfect way to get into personalizing your fabric.<br />
<br />

The three projects in the book that use this technique are the Watercolor Baby Bibs, Whole Cloth Painted Baby Quilt, and Freckles Tote Bag:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
All three of the projects use base fabrics that are neutral and soft, which are then painted with a super cool liquid dye by Jacquard called Dye-Na-Flow. The great thing about Dye-Na-Flow is that it soaks into the fibers of your fabric and doesn't change the feel of it-- which makes it perfect for baby items.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL5cfw7mWNDelF4z-TwwGCr8e8U02OgaeWwl51fvJBqvL-6Pa9sKsOIYUUSJz758jOdj8FE-8rkm9N2JSY1NYb6BtK5IiYHgnSjcSCWTL6WLACUm7BsQYo6ZJG8WJMjDsm4cahx4jyXq6o/s1600/IMG_8015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL5cfw7mWNDelF4z-TwwGCr8e8U02OgaeWwl51fvJBqvL-6Pa9sKsOIYUUSJz758jOdj8FE-8rkm9N2JSY1NYb6BtK5IiYHgnSjcSCWTL6WLACUm7BsQYo6ZJG8WJMjDsm4cahx4jyXq6o/s640/IMG_8015.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can easily find the larger bottles of Dye-Na-Flow at your local art store, <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/jacquard-dye-na-flow-fabric-colors/" target="_blank">Dick Blick</a>, and <a href="http://www.dharmatrading.com/paints/dye-na-flow-fabric-paint.html" target="_blank">Dharma Trading</a>. Smaller bottles are sometimes found more readily in something called "exciter packs" at <a href="http://www.joann.com/search?q=dye-na-flow" target="_blank">JoAnn Fabrics</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Jacquard-JAC9908-Dye-Na-Flow-Exciter-9-Colors/dp/B0006IKE70" target="_blank">Amazon</a>, and Michaels stores.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOlG5OtKCpNhZpKR0YUK19ush9WR2AgHwaQSso_11Bkm8GIThWpBP1vm1m0mlWXkAAMR_3FF9_kDGQb5teb3vfEBqv-b9pGP-WSnX0hvfHZuyl53aacrTIdP7YJWXNCYgtvQa8ctFXAzGd/s1600/IMG_8013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOlG5OtKCpNhZpKR0YUK19ush9WR2AgHwaQSso_11Bkm8GIThWpBP1vm1m0mlWXkAAMR_3FF9_kDGQb5teb3vfEBqv-b9pGP-WSnX0hvfHZuyl53aacrTIdP7YJWXNCYgtvQa8ctFXAzGd/s640/IMG_8013.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are really good for smaller projects and for color mixing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Once you learn the technique, it's so easy to use it on other projects!<br />
<br />
I used the Whole Cloth Painted Baby Quilt technique on fabric for a Geranium Easter dress for Charlotte:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8GIHuDkTpTuvGq4NNHQLKaPVutDb68-q0nqpW0NtdCXBtqQHaEH8KaZisZcaMEDzlbrKP9Phgc1nN03onvm1KQt45kAoFKLBoxbXtrurZ7-9WL29-WNbLKx7qvGtmAKx4KF1SXDPYxw7O/s1600/IMG_7588.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8GIHuDkTpTuvGq4NNHQLKaPVutDb68-q0nqpW0NtdCXBtqQHaEH8KaZisZcaMEDzlbrKP9Phgc1nN03onvm1KQt45kAoFKLBoxbXtrurZ7-9WL29-WNbLKx7qvGtmAKx4KF1SXDPYxw7O/s640/IMG_7588.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMXV0OKsYVDrmZygoAAK4Uyu59VLDwVt9OlUYQgPaGa3NESUGPg6tYKQM3R340h8mqPJfpsgAHa9Hc9Zw5x8LHF7Lj-i6zd_Y-Qccn6vGrfB_LPRCPxhxLLcGTl12s7DscugueDPKSccNm/s1600/IMG_7597.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMXV0OKsYVDrmZygoAAK4Uyu59VLDwVt9OlUYQgPaGa3NESUGPg6tYKQM3R340h8mqPJfpsgAHa9Hc9Zw5x8LHF7Lj-i6zd_Y-Qccn6vGrfB_LPRCPxhxLLcGTl12s7DscugueDPKSccNm/s640/IMG_7597.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've dyed panels of white linen blend Essex to make different versions of the Leather Bottom Zipper Pouch that's also a project in Beyond Cotton:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDFk643C_xykUFLvJ8teLPhvZJlELgHpSb4qE9hgH5deoDr01AnlZ5wAkhI73Ve7cbHkiSgy0MwBFhkOlJ3Ij6UZ77fjKe-R9gZiUnt5zYN2vYZFZ7pyceJs-WCTlqhrCqi-XcvfYd9xAx/s1600/IMG_4429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDFk643C_xykUFLvJ8teLPhvZJlELgHpSb4qE9hgH5deoDr01AnlZ5wAkhI73Ve7cbHkiSgy0MwBFhkOlJ3Ij6UZ77fjKe-R9gZiUnt5zYN2vYZFZ7pyceJs-WCTlqhrCqi-XcvfYd9xAx/s640/IMG_4429.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And I've played around with painting designs and using a Sharpie Rub-a-Dub laundry marker to do accent marks:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha_osnliKottt9ZKbsmLoewaaWzqBGy8b1KqhaWSgksC7f5iiaVYSZCjTzXY-yt7r8C_V09fVyS96w_GArYbM__a_unpyoTDyk1pgGim2Wq7Pp_EKWU6pdjY0J1OfbucZE24lkG251STCo/s1600/IMG_7871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha_osnliKottt9ZKbsmLoewaaWzqBGy8b1KqhaWSgksC7f5iiaVYSZCjTzXY-yt7r8C_V09fVyS96w_GArYbM__a_unpyoTDyk1pgGim2Wq7Pp_EKWU6pdjY0J1OfbucZE24lkG251STCo/s640/IMG_7871.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sandi of the Crafty Planner used this technique to play around too. You can read her review of the book and more about her project <a href="http://craftyplanner.com/2015/11/24/beyond-cotton-book-review/" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>

Have you tried this technique yet? If you're a beginner or just nervous about dyeing or printing fabric, I bet you'll be hooked once you learn how easy, inexpensive, and fun it is. Give it a try! And don't forget to post and tag your photos on Instagram with #beyondcotton and #beyondcottonchallenge this month to get some great prizes! </div>

<br />
Just a quick note to let you know that the Beyond Cotton Challenge is starting next week! I'm excited to start sharing all of the different projects in the book, but I'm even more excited to see what everyone will make!<br />
<br />
More details to come on Monday, but in the meantime, I'm giving away 3 books this weekend via <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kristafleck/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>. You can also purchase Beyond Cotton on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1940655153/ref=s9_simh_gw_g14_i3_r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0TV5TTCPFQH37D7JDF26&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2437869742&pf_rd_i=desktop" target="_blank">Amazon</a>, the <a href="http://luckyspool.com/products/beyond-cotton" target="_blank">Lucky Spool website</a>, or through my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SpottedStones" target="_blank">etsy shop</a> (copies are limited there and I will ship just in the US).Kristahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02479408778852456062noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290686855779379332.post-81816360648786425702015-12-15T12:09:00.001-09:002015-12-15T12:09:50.562-09:00Mighty Lucky Quilting Club <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Can you believe we are almost through 2015? I love a new year, and the new adventures that come with starting over each January. This coming year, I'm excited to be a part of something fun and adventurous for quilters-- the <a href="http://luckyspool.com/products/mighty-lucky-quilting-club" target="_blank">Mighty Lucky Quilting Club</a>! I hope you'll join in too.<br />
<br />
As you know, I'm a big proponent of making your work your own. Learning new skills is what allows you to do that. When you join Mighty Lucky, you'll receive a new training challenge each month from a list of amazing instructors:<br />
<br />
January – Krista Fleckenstein (yes, that's me!)<br />
February – Season Evans<br />
March – Rossie Hutchinson<br />
April – Alison Glass<br />
May – Amy Gibson<br />
June – Angela Walters<br />
July – Cheryl Arkison<br />
August – Sarah Fielke<br />
September – Jacquie Gering<br />
October – Nicole Vogelsinger<br />
November – Amanda Jean Nyberg<br />
December – Carolyn Friedlander<br />
<br />
This isn't a block-of-the-month club-- the projects will be skill and technique based, with lots of helpful examples. Members will receive support throughout the month and be able to cheer each other on through social media using the #mightylucky hashtag. (And there will be giveaways. Really, really good giveaways.) With all of that training, you'll be flexing your new quilting muscles with confidence! And who doesn't want that?<br />
<br />
Want to join the Club? Learn more about it and <a href="http://luckyspool.com/products/mighty-lucky-quilting-club" target="_blank">sign up here</a>. My challenge launches January 1st, and I'll be doing my own "mystery" giveaway next week with the tools to get one Mighty Lucky member started. <br /></div>
I think I've said this a zillion times-- writing a book is no joke! But I am so excited that my book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Cotton-Making-Modern-Projects/dp/1940655153">Beyond Cotton</a>, is almost out and that I'll get to see the first copies at Quilt Market in two weeks! You can see some <a href="http://luckyspool.com/collections/books/products/beyond-cotton">sneak peeks of the pages and projects on the Lucky Spool site</a> too. I'll be sharing more of the projects on here very soon.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
Now that it's wrapped up and the kids are back in school, I've had a bit more time for new projects. I joined the Schnitzel and Boo Mini Quilt swap on Instagram and decided to make a version of Anna Maria Horner's Feather Bed Quilt (I was going to link it up, but it looks like her website is getting a bit of work done). My partner likes bright and bold fabrics, so I used a mix of shot cottons (my favorite) and some Cotton + Steel basics on an Ivory Essex linen. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/22016273046/in/dateposted-public/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="mini rainbow feather quilt"><img alt="mini rainbow feather quilt" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5664/22016273046_28bd89c410_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The free pattern calls for strip piecing a grouping of fabrics, then cutting the feather sections out using a template. Since I knew I wanted each feather to have different fabrics, I ended up using the template as a guide for paper piecing. I cut each fabric into a strip that was about 1-2'' wide and 6 inches long, stitched and flipped them one by one until the template was covered, then trimmed the feather to size. It went very quickly! It's a technique I'd use again.<br />
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/21854603108/in/dateposted-public/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="mini rainbow feather quilt"><img alt="mini rainbow feather quilt" height="640" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/585/21854603108_a8253d1229_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With the extra time, I'm also starting to restock my neglected <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SpottedStones">etsy shop</a> with items like these watercolor dyed pouches. </div>

Welcome! It's my turn on the <a href="http://poppyprintcreates.blogspot.com/2015/04/make-it-take-it-blog-hop.html">Make It, Take It Blog Tour</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/17059157276" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="make it, take it blog tour by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="make it, take it blog tour" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8748/17059157276_08c27e7786_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Krista Hennebury, or K1 as I like to call her, is one of my best far-away-turned-real-life sewing friends. As she's also mentioned, we met through Flickr groups along with my fellow blog tour buddy Krista Withers (K2) because of our shared name. I have been lucky enough to be included at Krista's incredible Loon Lake retreat in British Columbia. She has been such a good friend who both inspires me and encourages me, and I was so thrilled for her to write this book about sewing with friends. After all, she's the queen of retreats!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16877727907" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="make it, take it blog tour by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="make it, take it blog tour" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8711/16877727907_26b734f128_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The project I created for Make It, Take It is the Crafter's Retreat Apron. Anyone who has sewn with me knows I am just <i>a little bit</i> disorganized. Really, that's a lie-- I'm incredibly disorganized. I'm always losing scissors or my phone under piles of fabric. I wear a crafter's apron to hold supplies when I sell at craft fairs, so I thought it would be a fun thing to adapt my pattern to use for sewing at retreats. This one has quite a few pockets for pens, safety pins, and maybe a candy bar. I added a swivel hook for scissors and a loop for hooking glasses. My optometrist husband says I have a good six and a half years before I'll need readers (did you know that 42 and 3 months is the average age to develop near sight problems?), but I'll be ready.<br />
<br />
<strike>I'm excited to say that I'm giving away two copies of Make It, Take It! Martingale is providing a digital copy, and I will be providing a hard copy. Just leave one comment below-- I'll pick two winners at random on Sunday.</strike> The giveaway is closed. Congratulations to Alli and Anya!<br />
<br />
I'm also excited to say that I can call each one of the contributors for this book my friend. Make sure to check out their blogs during the tour to learn about their projects too!<br />

I love the end product, but it took all of my energy. Needless to say, it also put me a week behind. Oops.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16429076271" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7406/16429076271_df40f16242_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This week's print is based off the inside of a cut onion. I tend to like small-scale prints. But this week I wanted to play with something big. This stamp measures about 3.5 by 4 inches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16430846975" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7335/16430846975_3b37cabe37_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Block printing with a larger stamp can have its challenges. The rubber block needed to be mounted to a piece of plexiglass to keep it from flopping around, and I ended up using a foam brayer to apply my ink (I usually make my own stamp pad). But I love the statement it makes when its repeated-- I just might make this into a screen to do repeats on fabric yardage.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16429906042" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8586/16429906042_bdb0532221_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I originally planned to make a tote bag with two printed panels, but I cut the panels too small! So I opted to make a box pouch out of one of them for now.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16243182068" title="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7403/16243182068_b51c968ec1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
It's lined with one of my favorite Cake Rock Beach prints.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/15810792453" title="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7422/15810792453_402c8d6192_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<br />
<br />
And it has a simple leather handle.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16430838045" title="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 4- 52 weeks of printmaking" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7414/16430838045_dd4128ceb8_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>
<br />
<br />
<strike>Want to win it? Just leave a comment here. I'll pick a winner on Wednesday!</strike><br />

Every time my family goes camping, we head to a lake or river nearby to skip stones. Some of my favorites are the ones that have striations like these lines.<br />
<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16327854795" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="week 3- river rock by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 3- river rock" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7519/16327854795_42a5b316ba_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
It's basically just an oval with 3 lines cut through. Quick and easy. I based it off of an old sketch.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16326070501" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="week 3- river rock by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 3- river rock" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8588/16326070501_83f1f303b4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
I decided to make something other than a zippered pouch this week. This drawstring pouch is from a <a href="http://sotakhandmade.blogspot.com/2013/05/drawstring-bag-tutorial.html">tutorial</a> by Svetlana at <a href="http://sotakhandmade.blogspot.com/">S.O.T.A.K. Handmade</a> and is one of my favorites. The lining is from Leah Duncan's new Gramercy line. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16140284608" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="week 3- river rock by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="week 3- river rock" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7533/16140284608_f4f4e03667_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Life is busy! But I love taking even an hour each week to try something new to share here. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As always, I'm sending this bag to one of you this week! <strike>Just leave a comment and I'll choose a winner at random on Thursday morning.</strike> Good luck! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week's winner is Lesley! Congratulations! </div>

This week I carved out a little spool block. It's printed on canvas using an ink pad for fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16080089067" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Week 2- Spool block by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="Week 2- Spool block" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7525/16080089067_e1ae3377c0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once it was sewed up into the pouch, I just felt like it was a little dull. Maybe it's the soft imprint of the ink? So I added a bit of hot pink "thread" and spiced it up a bit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/15643533604" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Week 2- Spool block by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="Week 2- Spool block" height="480" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7502/15643533604_16fe4f0452_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It's lined with a great Suzuko Koseki sewing print! I couldn't resist.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm so excited to do the regular giveaways. I think you'll like what's in store for next week.<br />
<br />
You may notice that I've done a bit of tweaking to this blog's design recently. I've wanted to simplify its design, but you also may notice that button there on the right. <a href="http://www.spottedstone.com/">I've got a new website</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
My brother helped set it up for me, and I love it! It will continue to be a work in progress as I tweak the content and photos, but for now it has a gallery of some recent work, links to this blog (where I will continue to post until I find a better way to integrate it into the website) and my etsy shop, and a few other bits.<br />

My first book with <a href="http://luckyspool.com/">Lucky Spool</a> comes out this fall! Eep! I'm right at the deadline for finishing up the manuscript this week so I expect to be a bit sleep deprived. But it's an exciting time. I can't wait to share more with you in the coming months.<br />
<br />
Have a great weekend!Kristahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02479408778852456062noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290686855779379332.post-18951446555352927172015-01-05T13:06:00.003-09:002015-01-07T14:31:07.368-09:00a challenge for the new year, and a giveawayLast year, artist and maker <a href="http://jenhewett.com/blog/">Jen Hewett</a> did something really cool that she called "52 Weeks of Printmaking." I first learned about her on <a href="http://instagram.com/jenhewett/">Instagram</a> and really admired her work. And I always thought her weekly printing practice was such a fun idea. She's doing a new project this year, but she handed the torch off to <a href="http://instagram.com/yardagedesign/">Nicole of Yardage Design</a>. I decided to join in.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Time is super tight these days, so I ended up pulling an old stamp that I had carved a few months ago to do my pattern. I played with the repeat in two different ways in a burnt orange ink on linen, then sewed the panels into a simple pouch. It's lined with one of my all-time favorite floral fabrics from Hokkoh.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/16023084417" title="A printing challenge for the new year by Krista, on Flickr"><img alt="A printing challenge for the new year" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8680/16023084417_73ccc87815_z.jpg" width="640" /></a>

<br />
<br />
After I made this, I thought about how much I absolutely love making pouches. They are such a good way to showcase handprinted fabric. So I'm adding something to my challenge. Every week, I'm going to make my printed pattern into a pouch or bag and give it away to one of you! It's a good way for me to say "thank you" for the encouragement you give me, and a good way to keep motivated to make something new every week. <br />
<br />
<strike>To win, just leave a comment here. Easy! I'll choose a winner on Wednesday morning. (International and U.S. readers, you are both welcome to enter this week. I can't ship internationally every time, but I'll try my best with smaller things!)</strike><br />
<br />
Happy New Year!<br />

I'm not sure how much I mention this, but skill-based learning is what it's all about for me these days. Anyone can follow a pattern. But when someone can teach you a skill, you can take that skill and apply it in ways that can really influence your own work and design. It's wonderful. And that's what you get with this video.<br />

<br />
Carrie's background in the arts (she went to <a href="http://www.risd.edu/">RISD</a>! Jealous!) influences so much of what she does. You can see it in her quilt patterns and her fabric design. It's so interesting to get a peek into her process, and I can already tell that the skills she's teaching me are going to make a difference in the work I'm putting out too.<br />
<br />
You can win a free copy of the DVD by visiting <a href="http://suchitysuch.blogspot.com/2014/09/dvd-giveaway.html">Carrie's giveaway post</a> through October 4th. And don't forget to visit the other blogger's who are joining the party too!<br />

It's been a crazy year, but I am slowly getting back into routines and am feeling jazzed about sharing what I love in this space again. There is so much good stuff coming up.<br />
<br />
What I love right now:<br />
<br />
<b>Being Settled </b><br />
<br />
We moved into a new house in June, after living in a teeny condo for 9 months. It was crazy fast-- 5 days from making an offer to moving in. We traded my dream area for one that is actually more dreamy in the end. We are just a 5-minute walk to one of the best trail systems in Anchorage. Our yard has an incredible amount of aspen and birch trees and hosts moose just about every day. It's so peaceful here. But the best thing? I have a sewing room again. I'm calling it my studio though, because a lot more goes on in there than just sewing. I could pinch myself, I love it so much. The wallpaper? Not so much. But its time is limited.<br />

<b><i><br /></i></b>
<b><i>Dinner: The Playbook</i> by Jenny Rosenstrach</b><br />
<br />
Anyone who talks to me on a regular basis knows how much I loathe cooking dinner. It's not something that comes easy to me. I get distracted by the day's activities and then panic around 5:00. It's so much work, and with 4 kids, someone is bound to throw a fit about what I make.<br />
<br />
I received Jenny's first book, <b><i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062080903/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1535523722&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0345549805&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0F2RRWRTP0ADWN97XCAN">Dinner: A Love Story</a></i></b> for my birthday this summer and have slowly been reading it and loving it. So I pre-ordered her newest book, <b><i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dinner-Playbook-30-Day-Mastering-Family/dp/0345549805">Dinner: The Playbook</a></i></b>, and devoured it soon after it arrived. Something about the way she writes, and the way she lays out her recipes, clicks for me. We sit down as a family on Wednesday nights and plan for the next week. So far we've had things like shrimp rolls, chicken parmesan meatballs, kale and chorizo frittatas, and creamy greek chicken noodle soup. Everything has been delicious and totally manageable to make. The kids don't love it all, but they are trying things and getting excited about each new meal. I know that meal planning is nothing new. But I swear that this book has turned me into a happier and better cook already. If you don't have this book, get it.<br />

<b>Carrie Bloomston</b><br />
<br />
I'm participating in a blog hop next week for Carrie Bloomston's new DVD with Interweave called <b><i><a href="http://www.interweavestore.com/art-techniques-for-quilt-design-grouped">Art Techniques for Quilt Design</a></i></b>. I'll have more to say then of course, but after watching parts of it last night-- WOW. I've always appreciated her fabric lines and patterns, but she has so much more to contribute to the quilting world as an artist. I love watching her translate her artistic training into exercises to drive creativity. I'm excited to watch more, and learn more, in the next few days.<br />

<b>Making</b><br />
<br />
After what felt like a pretty big dry spell, I am back to making and creating every day. Some days that means waking up at 5:00 a.m. so I can get time to myself. Some days it means letting the laundry stack up. I've been carving stamps, dyeing and painting fabric, stitching quilts and bags and clothes, sketching, and experimenting. I'll share some of it. Some of it will have to wait for sharing until later. But it's so great to be doing what I love again.<br />

<br />
Recently I got to test another pattern-- the <a href="http://betzwhite.com/2014/05/road-trip-club-pattern-1.html#.U4d4u-8nJaR">Road Tripper Duffle from Betz White</a>. Betz knows her stuff! Many of the construction techniques were new to me, and they produced a really sturdy and professional looking bag. Claire has been dying to adopt it to use for our road trips this summer! <br />

<br />
You can get the pattern by joining the <a href="http://betzwhite.com/road-trip-pattern-club">Road Trip Pattern Club</a>. Upcoming designers include Patty Young, Carla Hegeman Crim, Liesl Gibson, and Carolyn Friedlander! So you know it's going to be good all summer long. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/12181059284/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Road Trip Case by Spotted Stone Studio {Krista}, on Flickr"><img alt="Road Trip Case" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5496/12181059284_b8d93521d7_z.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I had the opportunity to be one of her pattern testers-- totally exciting! I love using Anna's patterns because they are always completely unique and well-written. This one was no exception. What I love about it is the options-- you can sew up pockets to fit the so-very-popular <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DMC6KAC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00DMC6KAC&linkCode=as2&tag=spotston04-20">Rainbow Loom</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=spotston04-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00DMC6KAC" height="1" style="border: currentColor !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
or make it a more versatile case for art or sewing supplies. <br />
<br />
Claire got a Rainbow Loom for her birthday last year and got really into making bracelets after Christmas, so I started with that version using some new fabric. Turns out that Lizzy House's Catnap and Carolyn Friedlander's Botanics are a match made in heaven... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/12181059714/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Road Trip Case by Spotted Stone Studio {Krista}, on Flickr"><img alt="Road Trip Case" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5501/12181059714_79e27ac863_z.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I sewed up the alternate version this weekend to use as a journaling case for me. I tried a couple of modifications to the pattern this time. I used a fabric tab and snap as a closure instead of a button (I loathe sewing buttons) and used two different fabrics for the handles. I also added a couple of felt pieces for needles like I saw Anna do on one of her versions in case I want to use it for sewing later on. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/12181391796/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Road Trip Case by Spotted Stone Studio {Krista}, on Flickr"><img alt="Road Trip Case" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3720/12181391796_6bd2977eb1_z.jpg" height="481" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
My first case took me about 6 hours from start to finish, but the second only took about 4 hours. (If I wasn't so terrible with making and applying bias binding it would be even quicker.) It would be a great gift, especially filled up with goodies! <br />

Yes, it's been awhile. Let's just pretend that it hasn't been almost 5 months (!) since I blogged, and that I did the all-important 2013 recap, posted pics of everything I sewed, told you about my fabulous retreat at Loon Lake in November, and all of that. Truth is that it's just been very busy. With 4 busy kids, moving, and just living life, it's been hard to keep up here. <br />
<br />
But I have been sewing. My latest finish was a wall hanging version of <a href="http://spottedstone.blogspot.com/2011/05/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2011.html">Ingrid</a>. Seen in baby form <a href="http://spottedstone.blogspot.com/2011/11/fat-quarterly.html">here</a>. It's a quilt that I love to make every time. <br />

I've also wanted to learn how to make boxed pouches for a long time, so when Bonnie of Pink Stitches posted <a href="http://pinkxstitches.blogspot.com/2014/01/boxy-pouch-tutorial.html">this tutorial</a> on her blog a couple of weeks ago, I gave it a try. I loved it! So much easier than I thought it would be. <br />

So there we go! Hopefully I'll be back more often. (And with photos taken with a real camera, that are not grainy and taken off of Instagram. Sorry about that.) I've missed this place. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
A few weeks ago, I offered to make pillows for an old friend's kindergarten classroom. One of her biggest challenges as a kindergarten teacher is teaching her students to read. She works so hard to get them excited about it, so I thought some cozy pillows for her reading area might help. <div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Most of the fabric for these came from my scrap bins. It was fun to include some hard-to-find stuff, like original Flea Market Fancy and fish-in-bags Munki Munki, knowing that I'm the only one who will recognize it as such. The backing is an Ikea canvas that I've had forever. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8bMoKXPYhtjc-inQNDcimkqkeeGEwh0qKyIZKNIdGM-O_YVgGv_zI-yeCDrGfQEeMM32J7d-TYbU9QnU3WH7PTQ2RlvPifkPNVVdeZ_OfqMGEGWEv5_bEWq9vxi6uSZ-DASGURzvCMwI5/s1600/floorpillows2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8bMoKXPYhtjc-inQNDcimkqkeeGEwh0qKyIZKNIdGM-O_YVgGv_zI-yeCDrGfQEeMM32J7d-TYbU9QnU3WH7PTQ2RlvPifkPNVVdeZ_OfqMGEGWEv5_bEWq9vxi6uSZ-DASGURzvCMwI5/s640/floorpillows2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I enclosed the pillows with invisible zips for the first time. I used <a href="http://sewkatiedid.wordpress.com/2010/04/24/zip-to-your-pillow/">Katie's tutorial</a>, which was clear and perfect. But if I do it again, next time I'll buy an invisible zipper foot. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMT_A_laeT3WEdUM-C_SWrynYG3Jec_7InJRHn94E8vXER_kisQGdRf6cdJOAGm9Yjk7DM_-aPqX1Y4Fbziv7OIOaBRCwEgRuDoSskU1pwIlIIJyDvrYF5_7MgqCOIApi0BZZymU5c-OJp/s1600/floorpillows3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMT_A_laeT3WEdUM-C_SWrynYG3Jec_7InJRHn94E8vXER_kisQGdRf6cdJOAGm9Yjk7DM_-aPqX1Y4Fbziv7OIOaBRCwEgRuDoSskU1pwIlIIJyDvrYF5_7MgqCOIApi0BZZymU5c-OJp/s640/floorpillows3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll admit that after so much time lately of not sewing, it felt foreign. Like I had to relearn my machines. I couldn't find my bobbins, extra feet, etc. Part of it was a failed sewing room rearrangement that I thought would make things more efficient. Then things just kept going wrong. My serger pooped out on me. I used a yellow chalk pen for some quilting lines on the blue pillow when I set my hera marker down and couldn't find it, and now that yellow chalk won't come out. Anyway, not my finest sewing. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But I think the kids will like them. </div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm so excited to have you here for the Patchwork, Please Sew Along! Ayumi is such a sweet friend and an amazing creator. I don't think you'll find anyone nicer in the sewing world. I was thrilled when I learned she was writing this book. </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3c3e3f; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My project is the Piece-of-Cake Shopping Bag. I wanted to give this one a try because I love the drawstring cover. I like to load my shopping bags up, and it's always maddening when they tip over in the car and everything spills out! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlO5aS4HqGCjCMXdYv2PWyEU1qcmnKLM9KaAqlpijI736SlfcQU9I-g3-ZBzhd6kxdW8I1xwZnEYrnoZOl7vPUTQvSgGgLpkQ5IZDnUncSs7R3RLAk3Ca6ImNVzmgV-EaOXq5HLlci-Ypi/s1600/shoppingbag2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlO5aS4HqGCjCMXdYv2PWyEU1qcmnKLM9KaAqlpijI736SlfcQU9I-g3-ZBzhd6kxdW8I1xwZnEYrnoZOl7vPUTQvSgGgLpkQ5IZDnUncSs7R3RLAk3Ca6ImNVzmgV-EaOXq5HLlci-Ypi/s640/shoppingbag2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;">One change I made was to not use oilcloth or laminated fabric for the interior. I did buy a vinyl tablecloth to try, but it was not the kind that Ayumi intended-- it was so icky to use in the end. I couldn't find laminates locally that I liked, so I used quilting cotton that I backed with my favorite interfacing, Pellon SF101, to give it more structure. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf0ty8O8yrOGcXWiixXwNA8psmQSV3K-6_UODOaJlzaSAqPwqBKf5NIHpzd6u94TEvtUEiLdUbFb2cBQeSLkipkgqi-8ShMb2NI6mSWOK5Mf-uknv4dahUCouPAso5VuMgYPlly8gZ3AJF/s1600/shoppingbag3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf0ty8O8yrOGcXWiixXwNA8psmQSV3K-6_UODOaJlzaSAqPwqBKf5NIHpzd6u94TEvtUEiLdUbFb2cBQeSLkipkgqi-8ShMb2NI6mSWOK5Mf-uknv4dahUCouPAso5VuMgYPlly8gZ3AJF/s640/shoppingbag3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;">I think the trickiest part of the bag is sewing the base pieces of the lining and the exterior to the sides of the bag. A tip: Put a dot 1/4" from each corner on the wrong side of your base pieces. When you sew up each side of the base, just line those dots up with the seam on your side pieces and sew between those points only, backstitching to lock your stitches. (And if you do end up with bunchy corners, no one is going to notice but you.) </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ-gxy_xSfiwx-ftQTK_eaIYrZSXgbIIO8JHAv0taJ6L6oIOkMLclAor1KMi3P4ar7aTXBlHycOkaNtyLxwFe30VzgP8p8oUBd0stk9Nqe0B4P0qtHOteqfVBVvy4jeTnUjUCIHOlZcCu1/s1600/shoppingbag5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ-gxy_xSfiwx-ftQTK_eaIYrZSXgbIIO8JHAv0taJ6L6oIOkMLclAor1KMi3P4ar7aTXBlHycOkaNtyLxwFe30VzgP8p8oUBd0stk9Nqe0B4P0qtHOteqfVBVvy4jeTnUjUCIHOlZcCu1/s640/shoppingbag5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<b style="background-color: white;"><br /></b>
<b style="background-color: white;">One more thing--</b><span style="background-color: white;"> the lining and exterior cutting measurements are the same. I wasn't thinking of this at the time, but because the top edge of the exterior is folded down a total of 1.5" to enclose the lining and cover, the lining is too big. It's not a huge deal, but it would fit a lot better if either the interior height was </span><i style="background-color: white;">decreased</i><span style="background-color: white;"> by 1.5" or the exterior height </span><i style="background-color: white;">increased</i><span style="background-color: white;"> by 1.5".</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3c3e3f; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=423816&u=835580&m=42943&urllink=&afftrack=" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="Creative Video Workshops on Creativebug.com" border="0" height="79" src="http://www.shareasale.com/image/42943/creativebug_728x90.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've been dabbling in screen printing my own fabric for awhile now. I posted about my first try with drawing fluid <a href="http://spottedstone.blogspot.com/2013/03/saturday-screen-printing.html">here</a>, and with photo emulsion <a href="http://spottedstone.blogspot.com/2013/03/screen-printing-part-2.html">here</a>. Originally I thought that making the actual screen was the hard part. What I didn't talk much about on my blog, but shared more on Instagram, was how frustrating it was to do the actually printing. I read every blog post I could find on how to do it right. I read screen printing forums. I watched countless YouTube videos. I got a lot of advice from other printers. Nothing clicked. I wasted a ton of fabric and wondered if I should focus my efforts elsewhere.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkkiVJeTQKKlzFg4_8O6I_wiRQnEMDcMCtEJs6OgEhQTW2YBWDsjfsKvsbxzcRstRcEjXXfEZkehGxSAWNBAKg93QYe4eBEWyePy-iGgBeqTmJMigZnGqT_PkTvNmqEgziWrGtZVZEGoHZ/s1600/print-messups.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkkiVJeTQKKlzFg4_8O6I_wiRQnEMDcMCtEJs6OgEhQTW2YBWDsjfsKvsbxzcRstRcEjXXfEZkehGxSAWNBAKg93QYe4eBEWyePy-iGgBeqTmJMigZnGqT_PkTvNmqEgziWrGtZVZEGoHZ/s640/print-messups.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I came across <a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?u=835580&b=457381&m=42943&afftrack=&urllink=www%2Ecreativebug%2Ecom">creativebug</a>, and the screen printing workshops with <a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?u=835580&b=457381&m=42943&afftrack=&urllink=www%2Ecreativebug%2Ecom%2Finstructors%2Fhilary%2Dwilliams">Hilary Willams</a>. Bingo!<br />

<br /></div>
Hilary is unassuming and knows what she's doing. She has five different workshops that take you from printing with a simple stencil to doing multi-color prints. Right now I'm just focusing on how to do really good single color prints on fabric, but I like knowing that I have the tools to do more advanced work later on.<br />
<br />
After watching this workshop, I ordered a few upgraded supplies from Blick Art materials (a good squeegee, aluminum frame screens, and lots of inks). I made a new screen with drawing fluid. Then I printed panel after panel with no mistakes. It was glorious.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNfRc2Ud60KsBCoAEy3nomk-CY92tn5EmCHPGQ04uLiGhkAvtJ6ZVrbIvZAoqIxAp00yKNDKnIg9ThwT7wc5q9fEMGPRrLI7FP8vYMLNZgPaFyumIVTBcZBmlfNNafb1c1nWR5f1eIhuYO/s1600/panles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNfRc2Ud60KsBCoAEy3nomk-CY92tn5EmCHPGQ04uLiGhkAvtJ6ZVrbIvZAoqIxAp00yKNDKnIg9ThwT7wc5q9fEMGPRrLI7FP8vYMLNZgPaFyumIVTBcZBmlfNNafb1c1nWR5f1eIhuYO/s640/panles.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Since then I've been printing and making and thinking about all of the fun possibilities ahead.
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr7Pr9SlHNtfcUpKYlZBgfUyUTKRJ7QbYz2r4I274PSz7s4DTU8Ba5CyO_5QWFs1zujngXfzTZzoYnT5cx35VO49TA9avkylRKljacyc0MZUnnKKZQEfgTO5o7rujiD2MvTQVdUO_vjeRw/s1600/pouches.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr7Pr9SlHNtfcUpKYlZBgfUyUTKRJ7QbYz2r4I274PSz7s4DTU8Ba5CyO_5QWFs1zujngXfzTZzoYnT5cx35VO49TA9avkylRKljacyc0MZUnnKKZQEfgTO5o7rujiD2MvTQVdUO_vjeRw/s640/pouches.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
There is really something wonderful about online workshops. The accessibility from home is so awesome. I love Craftsy too and have signed up for a few of their classes, and I definitely plan to take more. I think both Craftsy and creativebug are valuable in different ways though. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My favorite things about <a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?u=835580&b=457381&m=42943&afftrack=&urllink=www%2Ecreativebug%2Ecom">creativebug</a>: </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
- There is a subscription option. While individual workshops range from $9.99 and up, you can get a subscription that gives you unlimited access to all of the workshops for a very reasonable fee. This means that I've been able to not only view the screen printing workshops, but I've been able to check out the other things I was interested in but wouldn't have probably paid for individually. Some of my favorites include all of Anna Maria Horner's workshops, Boho Leather Cuffs with Elke Bergeron, and Image Transfers with Courtney Cerruti. Claire has really loved the apothecary workshops with Amy Karol and the various kids workshops. I can let her watch as many as she wants without worrying about the cost. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
- The workshops are thorough but condensed. I'm able to watch workshops and learn in a short amount of time. That's huge. The Intro to Screen Printing workshop is only 42 minutes long, so I watched it in a naptime and then went back to review the individual sections as I was printing. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
So that's how I finally learned to screen print fabric (without pulling my hair out). If you're interested in trying too, I really believe that this is a great place to start.<br />

My quilt, Everything's Coming Up Rainbows, has been warming Avery's bed every night since it returned home. It was such a fun one to design and sew. I've been so excited to see other people making it too! It looks so different every time.<br />

<br />
Blogging, and anything creative really, has taken a backseat to summer. It's been so good though. Anchorage weather was glorious through the month of June, and now we're in the middle of a family adventure. We are in Seattle after a week of road tripping from San Francisco through Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, the Redwoods, and the Oregon coast. Much of that area was new to me and the kids. I've loved every minute. And there is still a lot of fun ahead.
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'll be back in this space more regularly very soon though, starting with a giveaway post on July 15th! See you then. </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/8751107644/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Welcome to Nunaka baby quilt by Spotted Stone Studio {Krista}, on Flickr"><img alt="Welcome to Nunaka baby quilt" height="640" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2871/8751107644_2efe2ea209_z.jpg" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My sister-in-law is expecting a little girl next month. I may have 4 children of my own, but I am VERY excited to finally be an aunt. So a special quilt was a must.<br />
<br />
It's a simple design created from half-square triangles. I used a variety of prints in navy, teal, soft red, coral, and yellow, based off the fabulous navy Tsuru floral. The light value fabrics are a spinoff of my much-loved mixed neutrals-- this time I used soft pink shot cottons, some Nani Iro double gauze, and off white Kona solids. I think the mix lends a sweetness to the quilt without being overbearingly pink. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/8751116782/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Welcome to Nunaka baby quilt by Spotted Stone Studio {Krista}, on Flickr"><img alt="Welcome to Nunaka baby quilt" height="480" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2857/8751116782_ee4c1af9a1_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I backed the quilt with a Kaffe Fasset shot cotton in Apricot. It is so incredibly soft! The binding is a fun teal floral I found at Jo Ann fabrics. I had originally planned to use a navy binding, but I'm not one to follow plans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/spottedstonestudio/8749983833/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Welcome to Nunaka baby quilt by Spotted Stone Studio {Krista}, on Flickr"><img alt="Welcome to Nunaka baby quilt" height="480" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8133/8749983833_5a9edbc8ab_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I always feel so funny naming quilts that I give away-- but for the sake of the festival, I've named this one "Welcome to Nunaka." It has particular meaning for the family. But Nunaka also means "a good place to live," and my niece is certainly going to be greeted with a whole lot of love.<br />

A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be a tester for Anna Graham's new pattern-- the <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2013/05/super-tote-pattern.html?showComment=1367589530717">Super Tote</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I love all of Anna's patterns. They're always well-written and have unique details. The <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2013/05/super-tote-pattern.html?showComment=1367589530717">Super Tote</a> pattern is no exception. This bag has a curved gusset, elasticized inner pockets, side pleats, and a recessed zipper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDupWzdO_cpk-Pew3bbfCwyoXQ8QT6Yy35j0Lfdn49gwQJh93Re6HY7IfIXWXZ3MC6VHLjn_4fXHOpUF1xSy9pkHEd_Ybphmw1V8AkYNAyJ2q1gRvzAOGDd7knTL3zRmAjnYYp_mKwxt2x/s1600/super-tote-zipper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDupWzdO_cpk-Pew3bbfCwyoXQ8QT6Yy35j0Lfdn49gwQJh93Re6HY7IfIXWXZ3MC6VHLjn_4fXHOpUF1xSy9pkHEd_Ybphmw1V8AkYNAyJ2q1gRvzAOGDd7knTL3zRmAjnYYp_mKwxt2x/s640/super-tote-zipper.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I ordered a fabulous Anna Maria Horner linen print for the main fabric of the bag. Then I shopped my stash. The gusset and handles are Essex Yarn Dye Linen in black, the accent panels are Alexander Henry's Heath in black, the lining is Momo Freebird Ovals in blue , and the inside pockets are Anna Maria Horner's Shattered in punch.<br />

<br />
The pattern came together very smoothly, even in its testing stages. Anna did something new this time around-- she created illustrations for the instructions, as opposed to using photographs. These diagrams make every step very clear.<br />

<br />
My <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2013/05/super-tote-pattern.html?showComment=1367589530717">Super Tote</a> had its first outing last night when we went to watch Avery in our citywide 6th grade band concert. I knew we would be at the arena for a few hours, so I loaded the bag up-- in addition to everything you see here, it also held snacks, a blanket, and my purse! It was comfortable to carry and opened really wide when we needed to dig in to get supplies. A+ for usability AND looks!<br />
