the after

Ta-da!

I finished the painting (save a teeny bit of high work due to a broken extension pole attachment) on Wednesday night but didn't have the energy to post about it.

The after:

I'll be honest-- while I like the green, the orange is giving me fits. I need to mellow out that big expanse of wall over the couch (and that darn speaker), but I'm not sure what to put on it? I started pulling random artwork from around the house then got discouraged. I'm thinking it needs something lighter in color to tie in the green. It's just so hard to find something that I like that doesn't cost the big bucks. Maybe I'll quilt something? Any suggestions are welcome, because home decorating is not exactly my thing.

Oh a quilt would look so warm and lovely on the beautiful orange wall! Maybe with some nice colorful pillows on the couch. Love the paint and your house is so inviting. Great job!

Your house looks great! I had the same problem above my couch. Three years of looking at a blank wall and not being able to find anything I loved in our price range I started quilting something. The top is halfway done and I am LOVING how it looks over the couch!

I think it is looking great Krista! How about something like the piece you made for your husband's office? It had both oranges and greens in it.

The middle picture has what looks like a 1930's print of some place. My SIL has those posters all over her house, framed and they look awesome. You can find them on ebay in the right colors...maybe three of them framed for that wall? A great focal point, colorful, and interesting. We have the prints from Yellowstone from our trip there two summers ago. They look terrific framed with the matting.

Check out the blog

She has many examples of textiles she's done all over the house that are amazing. And she just finished a living room redo also.

The colour is awesome! I think all you need is something taller where the lamp is. Maybe a tallish tree type plant or maybe a dark colour ladder. That would take up some wall space and give you more of a "frame" for the artwork that is already there (the right side of the wall is of course the other side of the frame) I think what you don't like is that your picture is tiny in comparison to the wall space. Give it a try and see what you think :-)

I'm a decorating disaster, so no advice, but the colours are nice -- still bold and cheerful.

It's not the wall colour, it's the empty space that is bothering you, I think - the repainted colours look terrific. I agree with Katie that you need to balance out the large artwork over the couch with something on the left hand side. The tiny picture next to the big one isn't working for me, either. I do like the suggestion of three (law of odds) larger framed posters behind the couch. Or maybe a triptich of vertical quilts?

Looks great! I think if your doing a quilt something like this would work,

Also I like Katie's idea about a ladder to balance it out. You could always get a ladder and display your quilts on it.

Good luck:)

Do you have IKEA in Alaska? You could buy some of those large canvas shaped pictures and cover them with simple pieced pictures. Give it a month or two though before you panic - sometimes new things just need time to settle in. It looks really cool to me.

I thought more about this last night. I think something else that would be help is moving the speaker down a couple of inches and placing the smaller picture above it. You'd have better balance than one really small thing on each side. I know the speaker isn't much of a decorating statement but it's something you have to work with.

that would be the perfect wall for some seriously cool vinyl!
or you could do 16 canvases mod podged with a fabric you like and hang them in a grid...
or just one stinking big canvas with fabric or a vinyl something....I would check out V and Co's blog for some great ideas--good luck!

I think it's time you put a big quilt on that wall... don't you think? c'mon, you can do it!!

I think a collection of photos/artwork would help de-emphasize the speaker and visually anchor the space (thank your lucky stars the speaker is so small. My husband has two 6'tall speakers on our main wall and they are 3' across at the base - just a little hard to disguise!!) The other option would be a quilt hung on the wall that pulls the other colours in the room would look fab! Can hardly wait to see the pictures!

Like Amy, I immediately thought of the quilted piece you did for your husband. That seems like a perfect fit for over your couch... A quilted landscape, bringing in all of the colors around the house and room.

The paint looks great!! I have no suggestions because I'm not good at that kind of thing. But I really like the paint!!

I do like the idea of the quilt you did for your husband--that was such a great quilt!

I do like the color change but it could be a little lighter and a little duller to relate more to the green. Good luck--when the color is perfect, you don't focus on it as much!

Love the wall colors, and I am all about the quilts on the walls. They are so cozy!

The colors turned out great! Love them.

You could do some fabric hoops with a real modern arrangement. ??? I'm not a real decorator either. I usually just get lucky.
