Pinwheel Quilt- Blogger's Quilt Festival

For all of my regular readers-- yes, I'm alive and kicking! It's been a busy few weeks in our house (I know I'm not alone!). I'll catch everyone up later. But for now, here's my entry for the Blogger's Quilt Festival!

I completed this pinwheel quilt in May of 2009 as a birthday gift for my sister-in-law, Jamie. I'll admit that it started as a wedding gift for her and my brother a year earlier, but got replaced by a food processor and put on the back burner for awhile. I had never made a quilt larger than child-sized before this one.

It was also the first time I had done half-square triangles. At the time, I didn't know that I should square them up before piecing them all together! Once I figured that out, everything came together.

I love looking back at photos of this quilt because it features so many of my favorite fabrics-- including orange mono pez, many Alexander Henry prints, and Prints Charming teardrops. Since making this quilt I've become more nervous about using fabrics that I love because I don't want to run out of them! And that's silly. So this quilt is a good reminder that there's no sense in hoarding fabrics. Don't leave those favorite fabrics folded on a shelf!

The quilt is beautiful You always remember your first full size quilt. Use fabrics you like it's more fun.
If you can't part with them make a charm hexigon and begin your own memory quilt.
Awsume!!!

Pinwheels make everything awesome. This quilt is gorgeous, and your message is a good one - why are we saving that fabric?? MAKE SOMETHING!

That's a wonderful, energetic quilt. I adore pinwheels (and yes, that squaring up is very helpful!). Glad all is well, I was just going to email you to check in. Happy Hallowe'en!

I like the philospohy of using your favorites so you can see them in the quilts! I'm about to make my first half-square ttriangle quilt, and I'm thinking of doing pinwheels, so it's lovely to see how beautifully yours turned out.

BTW I've started making myself little sewing accessories, like needlebooks or pincushions, out of my favorite fabric scraps, so I'll have them around even when I've used the rest- it makes me feel comfortable about using the yardage!

Beautiful pinwheel! I love the bright colors. I'm going to dig through my stash and see what I come up with.

Isn't it funny how a gift can go from being for a wedding to a birthday, or from a birth to a birthday, or from a gift to comfort a sick person to a memory for one passed on. Not funny I guess, more like perfect. Love your quilt!

beautiful !! I'm working on a pinwheel for my sister's Christmas gift and got 'stuck' ; couldn't decide whether to do a border , or just all pinwheels and your lovely quilt made my decision ..... no border ! NICE job !

As always, your color/fabric choices are the best.

I have a horrible habit of saving fabric. I don't know why either. There is always another "must have" to take its place.

Glad to see you are still on the scene.

Lovely, I always adore pinwheels. And I agree about using favorite fabrics, how can they really be loved if they're stuck on a shelf...and I'm off to break open a fat quarter bundle!

What a pretty quilt! The pinwheels are so cheery.

Loved your comment "started as a wedding gift but gave a food processor instead". We did the same thing for a wedding we attended this year (the cut quilt pieces are now in my closet waiting to be sewn together.)

What size did your quilt end up being and what size squares did you use, if you don't mind sharing? SEeking ideas for my mother's 60th birthday present and I've always wanted to make a pinwheel quilt! Yours is gorgeous and such an inspiration!
