airplanes

The little airplane quilt is complete!


I was asked to make a quilt for a soon-to-be-born baby boy whose parents are both pilots. Because of this, I was asked to incorporate airplanes. I didn't have time to search out airplane fabric, so I found this paper-pieced airplane pattern on Quilter's Cache and got to work.


The palette features deep reds, blues, mustard yellows, and greens. I may have gone a little crazy with my combos on some blocks, but I think they all work.  Fabrics include prints from Cloud9's Cut Out and Keep, Joel Dewberry's Modern Meadow, Kei Honeycomb, Cosmo Cricket, Denyse Schmidt's Greenfield Hill, American Jane, and a few other lines. The grey sashing is Carolina Chambray in Ebony. The red crosshatch binding is Alexander Henry Heath in Tomato. I'm happy to say that every little bit came from my stash! Woo hoo!


I was also asked to make a coordinating doll quilt for the new big sister. I used an extra airplane block and scraps to come up with something fun.



It always feels good to finish a project, especially on such short notice! Now I've got a sewing room redo waiting for me.

    This is the perfect quilt for a little boy!!
    I keep telling my friends to reproduce so I can finally start making all these fab baby quilts but they just don't listen!

    so beautiful! I love the airplanes and the colors are great. another fabric I have to hunt down, love that carolina chambray. :)

    A great finish Krista! This is certainly the perfect quilt for the child of pair of pilots! I love all the fabric mixing and matching...not crazy at all.

    Ditto on all the comments above. Dang, when I typed "Ditto" my mind immediately went to the movie "Ghost".

    Also wanted to say it looked odd seeing the sweater in the last photo. Here we are in Georgia sweltering and you've got a photo today with someone in a sweater. Whoo-wee! Makes me hotter just thinking about being in a sweater.

    Cool! I, too, am planning an airplane themed baby quilt for my nephew and his wife who are also both pilots. This is really great. I'm a rather new quilter so I need to use an easier pattern and rely on some airplane fabric by Anne Kelle. I like your doll quilt idea, too. Sweet! I don't know if the baby I'm quilting for will be a boy or a girl so I'll make the quilt and then maybe I'll use leftover fabric to make a little sleeping bag or blanket that can work for dolls or stuffed critters. Oh, aren't I getting all ambitious. We'll see.

    goodness Krista!! Im looking high and low for Carolina Chambray in ebony and when I google that, your blog post is the first thing to pop up! do you have a local shop with this still in stock? any idea where I might find ebony??
